What is happening?

With El Niño roasting the global North this summer, the debate about global emissions is now being led toward a new goal – reducing atmospheric CO2.

What to watch?

Societal resistance to the concept of global warming has waned significantly so the question, and opportunity, is: how could this be achieved? The major shift away from fossil fuels is still a decade or more away, but now that state capitalism has returned as a global force, putting ‘beyond zero’ into strategic planning now seems astute.

What to do?

It's crucial that organisations understand and plan for the implications of this shift towards a "beyond zero" future. Any chief of staff should work with the leadership team to include sustainability as a central tenet of their strategic planning.
In practical terms, this could mean conducting a comprehensive carbon footprint audit of the organisation's operations and setting measurable goals for reduction.
Given the growth of state capitalism, there may be significant opportunities to leverage government initiatives and funding in this area. The chief of staff should stay abreast of these opportunities with a view to capitalise on them in ways that will fundamentally support your organisation's strategic goals.
